Mark “the Bird” Fidrych passed away yesterday while working on his farm in Massachusetts. I was in utero during his magical 76′ season, and frankly have no memories of his 5 seasons with the Tigers. I do know he made a huge mark in Detroit, and left a big impression with my family and friends [...]

Lots of strange news coming out of Lakeland as we make final preps for the 2009 season. Sitting just 1  home run shy of 500, the Tigers cut Gary Sheffield this morning. No time for sentimentality here. This news comes on the heels of sending Dontrell Willis and Joel Zumaya to the DL. Defying all laws of medicine, the Tigers [...]

After another inspiring performance by Nate Robertson last night, I thought I would open a discussion about awarding a 2008 Tiger LVP. There are plenty of candidates and they each make a strong case. But, there can be only one.
Edgar Renteria
Put aside the fact that we gave up a promising young pitcher in the trade [...]

Joe Torre is a racist. Sheff never took steroids. Sheff is still an every day player that can play outfield. And yes, L Ron Hubbard is a prophet and we have been implanted by extraterrestrials.
Deal with it.

The Tigers are dragging ass through the dog days of summer, scuffling to an anti climatic ending to the 2008 season. About the only thing interesting now is the late inning carnage delivered by the bullpen, and the new and unusual ways we find to blow late leads (Renteria errors, bullpen meltdowns, etc.).
I know it’s [...]

Jim Leyland has always been a players manager. He sticks up for his guys and I admire him for that.
That said, I feel a lack of accountability has permeated the clubhouse, and much of it rests on Jim Leyland. Since Sunday’s meltdown I’ve been waiting patiently for heads to roll. The fact that Fernando [...]

The news came quick and startling yesterday. Much like it did back when we landed him as a free agent in 2004. Pudge was traded to the Yankees and I couldn’t help but feel we closed a chapter in Tiger history.
Fans here have mixed feelings about Rodriguez. He strikes out too much. He no longer [...]

A starting pitcher with an ERA approaching 7? A closer with an ERA nearing 6? Robertson and Rodney are quite the dynamic duo. How can Leyland justify trotting these clowns out there? I suppose you could argue we don’t have much choice. Then again, blowing 6-0 leads, giving up 8 runs in 3 innings, walking [...]

The Free Press recently ran an article grading Tiger players on their first half performances. It was laughably hometown biased and soft on the players. Here’s a more fair and balanced report.
Pudge Rodriguez, C
His batting average is up from last year, but the power numbers are non-existent. He still calls a solid game and his defense [...]

Playing against Craig “shocks and struts” Monroe got me thinking, we need better nicknames for the current Tigers. This year’s team is ripe with possibilities. Utility infielder Mike “hot lips” Holliman. Curtis “grandslamerson” Granderson. Clete “slack jawed yokel” Thomas. Marcus “spring on the” Thames. Todd “roller coaster” Jones.
A few that could still use a bit of [...]
