Cleveland comes to town tonight for an extended weekend of baseball. Two teams picked by most to challenge for the central title are instead battling for last place. With uninspiring baseball being played by both teams, I’ll turn my attention to a discussion of mascots.
How the hell is “Chief Wahoo” still the primary logo for Cleveland? Seriously, has there ever been a more offensive mascot? Why are more people not outraged by this?
Admittedly, I’m not a fan of most anything Cleveland. Regardless, this mascot is a cruel joke. We should all be offended by this, regardless of race or ethnicity.
Wow, DetTigers. You’re deep. Personally, I do prefer the Mexican Omelet to the Cowboy, with go ‘ol American cheese. Shouldn’t we also be outraged by that term? “American”. I mean really. Do Canadians, Mexicans, and United States-ians all eat the same cheese? When did cheese wrapped in cellophane become “American”? That is a concept strictly reserved for us United States-ians. Canadians know cheese, especially in Montreal. I’m not even going to get started on the term “omelet”. Touchet, DetTigers. Touchet.
I’ve always loved Chief Wahoo. Best mascot in baseball. The San Diego Chicken does even come a close second.
I say P.C.ness ruined the EMU mascot… Eagles my ass! Once a Huron, Always a Huron (insert .gif of a crying native American here.)
Seriously though Billy, why you wasting our time with this? Skip the fluff and tell us what we need to do to turn this season around… FAST!
see the other posts Toddy. we been plotting and scheming for the turnaround all season. problem is leyland won’t listen!
maybe i lose credibility with all the references to cheesy 70’s and 80’s pop culture?
Best Mascot in baseball? What the hell? What’s so great about it? It’s ridiculous. It’s embarrassing. So is the Tomahawk chop they do at Turner Field. Really in poor taste.
I have nothing against using Native American iconography. In fact I think the Chicago Blackhawks do quite a nice job, and the story of how the name and icon came to be are very respectful. But Chief Wahoo is just sick and sad. And it isn’t PC BS.
What happened with the Hurons, was PC crap. The logo was tasteful, in my opinion. BUT this is something much worse. And I appreciate the discussion.
well said chirod. i agree with you completely. i’m as weary of PC crap as the next guy, but some material is just damn offensive. that was the only point i was trying to make.
Chief Wahoo is the best logo in baseball by far. Quit being a bunch of babies already. Do you even know why Cleveland is the Indians? Do some simple research and see it is not offensive but a tribute. Idiots. You guys make me sick.
if cleveland wanted to tribute the native americans they’d do it in a much more respectful manner. not a grinning, goofy caricature.
Regarding “simple research,” do a bit yourself and you would see that most native americans feels “chief wahoo” is very insenstive and racist. shouldn’t that be enough in itself for a change?
on another note, thanks for reading my blog. dialogue is good. sorry if it “made you sick.”
peace.
Now I am 100% against racist and sexist ideas, but really…
Look at the damn logo. He has a feather on the back of his head. Chief Wahoo portrays a NATIVE AMERICAN, not and Indian. Remember when Christopher Columbus first came to America and mistook it for India, thus calling the Native Americans there Indians? Yeah. So the only people who should be offended are people of Native American decent, since the logo is really a ‘charicature’ of them, but I have not read about one of those people offended. Only actual Indians, and they really shouldn’t be.
“Charles Somers, the team owner, asked the local newspapers to come up with a new name for the team. They chose “Indians” as a play on the name of the 1914 Boston Braves, who were known as the “Miracle Boston Braves” after going from last place on July 4 to a sweep in the World Series. ”
Even if it DOES offend, it was never meant to.
If I was an Indian/Indian American, or Native American, personally, I would be pretty cool with this logo. But that’s just me, everyone is different and that is obviously okay. Having a major league baseball name and logo “The Cleveland Indians” means that the ethnicity is just THAT cool.
What I’m trying to say is, it’s hardly offensive, but I totally understand why you think it’s inappropriate, so don’t get me wrong. It is, in a way. Everyone has different opinions and that’s okay.
But Chief Wahoo being sick? And sad? No, it’s not. Really. Reading that made me laugh pretty hard, sorry.
Worst blog entry ever. Detroit sucks. Chief Wahoo rocks! Quit being a baby.
If you are offended by this logo they how not the boston celtics which is a leprechaun holding a shalale. which is very much as you put it “a goofy caricature” of the irish. should they change there name and logo? i am 100% irish and am in no way offended by that. nor should anyone of chief wahoo.
Unless you are a Native American Indian you have no say in deciding if this image is racist or offensive. It is the group affected who knows if the image is upsetting to them. If you check around on the web some you will find an old graphic from back in Nazi Germany of a Jew that is a mirror image of Chief Wahoo. Is that not offensive?
The curse is on Cleveland, it will remain winless in the World Series until it gets rid of that stupid Chief Wahoo.
